Slack is the benchmark for team chat and deserves the reputation. It is fast, polished, and its app ecosystem is far larger than ours and will stay that way. If messaging and integrations are what you need, Slack is a good answer and we would not try to talk you out of it.
Nobody replaces Slack because they want worse chat. They replace it when they realise the chat app is one of five subscriptions doing what one could — Slack for messaging, something for rosters, something for leave and HR, a spreadsheet for timesheets, and a payroll tool that none of them talk to. WorkAndGo keeps the chat good and puts the rest in the same place, so a shift swap, a leave request and the conversation about them are not in three systems.
Slack assumes everyone has a desk and a laptop. A lot of Australian businesses are not shaped like that: people clock on, work a rostered shift, and need their roster and their pay more than they need a threaded conversation.
